TV news booboos

These clips are all over the Internet. Technical glitches or just plain incompetence?

Merry Miller, the novice reporter in the video below, was described in some blogs and websites as the world's worst celebrity interviewee ever. Tsk tsk. Here is the poor kid's infamous interview with actress Holly Hunter.

Miller's station, ABC explains what happened in this entry.

Just when you think Miller is the worst reporter ever, this site says, a local newscaster in Seattle named Connie Thompson makes Miller sound like the highly-respected news anchor Walter Cronkite. "Bless the person who took the time listening to hours upon hours of footage to compile a lengthy string of flubs from the easily confused reporter, who is probably sitting at home right now wondering if Donald Trump has just fired someone or if one of his building’s has burned down," the site said.

The much-maligned video:

Sorry but I can't help myself remembering that I posted here Michael Fajatin's report sometime ago. I still don't personally know Fajatin, but I am quite glad that at least I have never seen or heard him doing a similar report again.

Hi sir! Nag-enjoy ako sa post niyo. I wasn't sure if I should laugh or cry when I watched the videos.

The first anchor may be a little (or extremely) dim, the second anchor may be dyslexic (I assume she reads from a teleprompter), and Michael Fajatin must have lost his train of thought because I think he is a good reporter naman on most days.

Minsan namemental block din po ako sa interview pag ninenerbyos, ang pangit din ng delivery ng questions ko, buti nalang walang camera para macapture yung moments na yun. :) haha. Now we know how it's so important to be alert and to learn how to think on your toes talaga. Also, having something between your ears helps.

It might be interesting to learn the fine art of TV news reporting/ anchoring sa bagong subject na illaunch ng CMC next June called B.J. 101 (Intro to Broadcast Journ) or something like that. Everyone's having a field day, though, coming up with jokes about B.J. :P

See you po on Aug. 17th!

haha. ako rin. parang i'm watching a horror video. the horrors! if i were in their place, i would have probably ask the ground to swallow me right then and there.

in fairness kay miller, i read somewhere that that was the first time miller went on-air. although i still think that that should not have been made an excuse by her -- or by her station's producers (kasi may fault rin sila doon: maybe they didn't prepare her well, or what questions to ask, etc.).

Iyong kay connie thompson, someone also reacted na baka dyslexic siya.

And the third, oh well. I guess he's a fine reporter. Siguro nga na-caught offguard lang. Or maybe hindi siya nagprepare ng spiel or script niya?

"Also, having something between your ears helps."

-- Haha! Yes, I think na kahit we do errors from time to time, especially when we do our interviews (gasp!), you can certainly make up for it when you research well on your interviewee or the topic you are discussing with him/her. Wag magtanong ng mga bagay-bagay na pwede mo namang i-research na agad. Prepare and arrange your questions early on, but don't forget to ask follow-up questions when needed. Sabi nga, just show your natural curiousity when you interview. Wag lang sana iyong pure and simple ignorance ang lumabas.

Wow. it's nice to hear that CMC is coming up with a course like B.J. 101 -- no matter how weird or interesting the connotations of its name have. Haha. Parang ngayon pa lang natatawa na ako. Parang: "What's your next class?" The reply: "Oh, it's B.J. 101." Oh maybe i'm more green-minded than the proponents of the course. Sana hinati na lang nila ang course into two: TV Journ 101 (TJ 101) and Radio Journ (RJ 101). I'm sure kulang pa ang isang sem kung tutuusin to discuss these two.

So, are you going to B.J. 101 next sem? =P see you on the 17th!
